What is DDR4 Memory?
Published 21st January 2016 | Article by KingstonMemoryShop
DDR4 is the latest evolution of RAM memory and is currently available for desktop PCs, laptops, ultrabook laptops, servers, motherboards, workstations together with a few other select devices.
DDR4, short for "double data rate fourth generation", is the latest RAM update designed to boost performance. Read on to find out more about what this new technology offers.
How is DDR4 different to DDR3?
DDR4 generates speeds between 2133 and 4266 MT/s (million transfers per second), compared to DDR3's speeds from 800 to 2133 MT/s. Speeds are most commonly referred to in the industry in Mhz, and DDR4 starts at 2133Mhz (PC4-17000).
So what exactly is DDR4?
Don’t worry, we’ll avoid going too techy here and just stick to the more basic facts.
Developers began planning the rise of DDR4 back in 2005, two years before even DDR3 hit the shops!
DDR4 supports a new power-down mode which allows the host device to go into standby without the need to refresh all memory, reducing power consumption and therefore overheats less and has a longer battery life.
DDR4 also uses much higher-density chips, so each memory stick (DIMM) will pack a lot more memory, as well as a much faster transfer speed of between 2133 - 4266 MT/s (million transfers per second).
How would it affect my tech?
For the average laptop with 8GB of memory, you will get an average a 20% reduction in power consumption which will give you a huge battery life extension as well as a reduced energy bill!
DDR4 will also enable you to add more powerful processors to your hardware giving you more advanced capabilities.
Less power will also give you that warm, fuzzy green feeling!
DDR4 For Laptops & Desktops
DDR4 is available in both SODIMM (laptop sized) and DIMM (desktop sized) modules. Starting at 4GB with speeds of 2133Mhz with the addition of 8GB and 16GB memory modules also available. Most laptops and desktops used at home will use non-ECC RAM which is non-parity.
DDR4 For Servers
DDR4 is available for servers and workstations in a variety of specs. ECC unbuffered, ECC Reg, LRDIMM (Load Reduced) and Non ECC formats. Just one of the benefits of increasing memory capacity within your DDR4 server is improved efficiency together with maximum productivity. It has been designed to be completely stable 24/7.
What DDR4 Gaming RAM is available?
There are many types of DDR4 RAM available.
If you are ready to take your gaming to the next level, then we highly recommend these HyperX RAM models all of which complement Intel’s 2, 4, 6 or 8 core processors;
HyperX Predator DDR4
The Predator comes in capabilities ranging from 16GB to 64GB with speeds up to 3000Hz. It comes XMP certified and is available in CL12-CL16 all optimised for Intel’s 100 series and X99 series motherboards. The HyperX Predator also boasts exceptional clock and latency timing specifications to enhance overall system performance.
HyperX Savage DDR4
Savage offers speeds of up to 3000MHz and latencies of CL12–CL15. Just like the Predator, Savage is optimised for Intel’s 100 series and X99 series motherboards. The Savage is available in single modules or in kits of 2, 4 and 8 and in capabilities of up to 12GB.
HyperX Fury DDR4
HyperX Fury automatically recognises its host platform and overclocks to the highest frequency possible, up to 2666MHz. The Fury is available in 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capability kits to suit your gaming machine. Fury’s sleek heat spreader ensures thermal heat distribution allows your computer to stay cool throughout your gaming no matter how heated the game may get!
